Real life example
Inputs:
A small-size solar park in Latvia with PV capacity 300kW. Current tariffs do not allow to survive. Midday-Evening spread up to 200 EUR, Night-Morning spread up to 100 EUR (NordPool statistics)
Direct solution:
Installation of 0,4 MW Energy Storage with effective capacity 0,3 MW will allow to charge battery during 3-4 hours in daylight time and release accumulated power to the grid in evening peak hours. Same operation to be repeated overnight, charging from the grid and releasing in the morning. Daily saving can reach 100 EUR
Recommended solution:
Installation of 1 MW Energy Storage with effective capacity 0,8 MW will allow to charge battery during 4-6 hours in daylight time (partially charging from the Grid in winter time) and release power to the grid in evening peak hour. Same operation to be repeated overnight, charging from the grid and releasing in the morning. Daily saving can reach 250 EUR
The owner of PV plant can also become more accurate in his daily forecast of power supply to the grid, being independent from unexpected weather conditions (supply mismatch can lead to penalties for PV plant owner)
In addition to providing direct benefits to solar PV system owners, the integration of BESS can also unlock new revenue streams and opportunities for participation in grid services.
Battery systems can be aggregated and enrolled in programs such as
Demand response
Frequency regulation
Ancillary services, allowing them to provide valuable grid support and earn additional revenue
